Designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Reims cathedral has seen 24 kings of France crowned. In 2006, the city of Reims – in the Champagne region – offered the emblematic building a permanent illumination of “champagne” white color.

The lighting design restitutes the unique color of the stone with a golden-white tint. It also visually anchors the cathedral in its dark nocturnal environment defined with the black silhouettes of large trees in the cathedral’s garden. Depending on movements, the direction of one’s journey or how the site is accessed, visitors can experience different readings of the lighting design.

Light highlights certain details and tones down others depending on viewing angles. Light affirms the rigorous composition and monumentality of the building, while also sprinkling with light the statues that pave the way of the romantic promenade along the garden.
