Massy, Franciades – Opera commercial area, France

Massy, Franciades Opera public aera

Public space reconversion

In the context of the store and housing upgrading operation of the ‘Franciades Opéra’ area (25,000m²)

The lighting project stems from a double intention: offering nocturnal atmospheres of quality in new public spaces, and welcoming the audience of the National Stage Opera in the evening, which attracts more than 40,000 spectators each year.

The new public spaces of the area do much more than welcoming: children, teenagers, locals can be seen enjoying the forecourt and the large seating banquettes from dusk. Pedestrian and commercial streets in the heart of the site are illuminated through tight ropes in order to keep the views on the plaza and the ‘Corneille’ park clear.

On the plaza, lighting elicits the passion and imagination of the opera: red graphic projections on the ground, reddish glow in the night of the underground parking exit stairs, banquettes that seem to float above the ground thanks to light, the magnificence of the tall poles that frame the space. These poles are at the scale of the plaza, in daytime they disappear thanks to their mirrored surface, at night they stand out with their luminous reddish vertical line.
