Le Havre, Oscar Niemeyer Library, France

more infos

Le Havre, Oscar Niemeyer Library, France

In the context of the rehabilitation of the Niemeyer site, comprised of exterior public spaces, the ‘Volcano’ theater and the new library (4,700 m²)

Lighting is part and takes advantage of the building’s possibilities, its surfaces and seams.

A zenithal light inundates the atrium space; luminous chandeliers float in the volume and diffuse their sparkle when daylight fades. Sound absorbent, light shades and light diffusers all at once, these clouds inhabit the volume and give back its monumental scale. These chandeliers are the result of a long, collaborative work with the SOGNO agency, in order to adjust the scale of the object and its photometric characteristics while maintaining a sense of lightness. The interactions between interior and exterior light qualities showcase the architecture at its best, and all of the daylight intake created modernizes and adapts the original building to its new uses.
